Silverback.

The lion has the claw and speed advantage, but I think that the lion will not have his way as we might tend to think. I think the silverback would overpower the lion when they came into close quarters. It could easily break some limbs and smash a skull once they began to wrestle. If the lion could get to his neck it would be over. I don't know if it could do that so easily though. Having the flexible and versatile limbs of a primate would make it difficult.

This sounds like a conversation two stoners were having back when I was in high school.  "'Ey brah, who you tink would win in a scrap, one lion, or one bear?" XD

Silverback, easy, although this would be cooler in my opinion.

Lol, that pick was shopped from two silverback lunging at each other. I know that's obvious already but I just saw that picture the other day so it was fresh in my mind.

I love silverbacks but they wouldn't stand a chance against a grizzly. Stregth wise I would say that the grizzly prolly probably has him beat in raw muscle power alone. Not to mention the inertia behind his swiping. Silverback could potentially crush his skull/jaw/face if he could get to it but could do little or nothing against the size of a grizzly. Would probably win against a black bear, and maybe a smaller brown bear, but definitely not a grizzly, kodiac, or polar bear.

You hijacked the thread! Grrr....so how would it go down vs. a lion? Does a lion have the strength or power to pin down a silverback?

It really comes down to the fact that a go-to move for gorillas when dealing with predators is to grab the top and bottom jaws of whatever is attacking them and pull in opposite directions, so I think that's pretty much it for the lion.  The funny thing is that grizzlies, kodiaks, and gorillas are all relatively peaceful animals until you piss them off or they have to defend their young, then they're capable of insane atrocities before reverting back to being big and cuddly.

Re: Silverback gorilla vs. lion

Is it really their instinctive response to pull the jaw apart? If so, that's pure beast. I could totally see one taking on an amur tiger with that as well. I was actually thinking that that would be the best way for a silverback to handle a lion if he knew how to do it.

And ya, the King Kong scene was exactly what I was thinking (that was the ONLY good scene in the movie btw)

Edit:

I didn't even agree with the animal face-off fight. I think a leopard would tuck tale it out of there because a silverback would handle that cat in a quick minute. It would take just one grip and it would be over for a leopard. He'd pull and mangle it apart in no time. Leopards are awesome but no match at all for a silverback.
